COMMON MYTHS PODIATRISTS HEAR

Myth 1 – You can remove ingrown toenails yourself

Ouch! That sounds painful just thinking about it. If an ingrown toenail has formed, this is because the nail curved into the skin surrounding the nail. That part of the skin then gets infected and a trip to your local podiatry clinic is needed. When trying to remove the ingrown infection yourself, you could damage your toenail further or cause the toenail to continue growing deeper into the skin. An appointment with a local podiatrist is a much better option.

Myth 2 – A foot specialist cannot fix a broken toe

A foot specialist will take steps to ensure your broken toe is properly treated to ensure healing. Without taking proper care, and allowing your toe to heal, you're putting yourself at risk for arthritis and deformities. A common practice is for your foot doctor to x-ray your toe and determines whether the toe is fractured or broken. Next, the podiatrist may add a pin, screw, or plate to reposition the bone. Depending on the severity, they may just recommend taping or using a toe brace.

Myth 3 – Corns have roots

In farmer terms, yes, but in toe terms, no. A corn is the buildup of skin that’s been ruined by excessive friction. Attempting to cut off a corn could cause you to have an infection, or even worse cause excessive pain. Infections that are not treated correctly can spread and become dangerous. Instead, if your corn has created a hammertoe effect, it’s a good idea to have your local podiatrist office surgically remove the corn so you have no further abnormalities.
