Diabetes affects more than 29 million people in the United States. If you are one of these 29 million you know that there are various ailments that can arise as a symptom of diabetes. One of the most important ailments to prevent is peripheral neuropathy. Neuropathy can affect the entire body, but your legs and feet are the most likely to be affected. As a podiatrist, I can help you prevent and manage any complications your feet may suffer.

What is Peripheral Neuropathy?

Peripheral Neuropathy is damage to nerves that send signals to your brain and spinal cord. Think of your spinal cord and brain as the trunk of a tree and your nerves as the branches that span throughout your body. The signals sent by these nerves are what allow you to feel sensations like heat and pain. Damage to these nerves can cause you to lose these vital sensations. This means you could have a serious injury on your foot and not even know until infection occurs. There are 3 simple steps to take to help with prevention:

  1. Examine Your Feet Daily

For the reason stated above, as a diabetic, you should be examining your feet every day. This is especially important after every injury.

Changes to look out for:

  • Temperature changes

  • Skin color changes

  • Pain in your toes or feet

  • Swelling in your ankles or feet

At your annual examination, I will provide a more thorough exam and look for addition sings of changes, such as broken skin or ulcers. I will also examine for loss of blood circulation and high pressure.

  1. How to properly clean your feet
