PODIATRY TIPS FOR YOUR CHILDREN’S FEET

Purchasing children’s shoes can be a fun task for parents. While fashion is important, more important is the durability of the shoes and the activity the child will use the shoes for. If you’re unsure of which style you should purchase, as your local podiatrist for recommendations based on your child’s age and foot size. If you’re not able to visit your local foot doctor, here are a few tips to keep in mind when shopping:

  • Purchase shoes that leave one finger width at the top for toe wiggle and growing room

  • Have your child try on the shoes with socks and tied laces

  • Check the sides of the feet as well as the toes to ensure the sides are not too snug

  • Young children can wear “all-purpose” sports shoes for ease of comfort

  • Rubber cleats are better for children than screw-on cleats

CHILDREN GROWING PLATES

Remembering that children have different growth spurts and growth patterns than adults is important. Growth plates in young boys do not finish closing until boys are 15-17 years old. In girls, their growth plates stop around 13-15 years old.

A children's foot specialist will often warn parents of the issues and stress that is put on growth plates with repetitive overuse. Instead, they’d like to see parents promoting an abundance of sports activities for their children rather than one sport.  This is more important for parents with children in sports that require long hours of practice daily. Statisticians have proven children are more susceptible to injuries when they only concentrate on one physical activity.
