Daylight is getting longer, the temperatures are getting warmer, and less snow is falling. That can only mean one thing, spring sports are right around the corner! For parents, this means the possibilities are heightened for spring injuries. While it’s nearly impossible to prevent the unexpected, there are actions you can take to help ease the injury should it happen.

PREVENTATIVE TIPS FOR CHILDREN IN SPORTS

Wellness Check-Up

Receiving a pre-wellness check-up for your children in between sports helps evaluate where they are currently at with their physical wellness. While most schools require this yearly, it’s still a good idea to have a physical between sports seasons. Adding a pediatric podiatry check-up is also a good idea to ensure your child’s feet are healthy and ready for the next wear and tear that happens with spring sports.

Gradual Practice Increases

Ensuring your child has a coach that gradually increases performance is very important in their wellbeing. Coaches that push your children too hard, too fast, can help aide in injuries happening.

Proper Footwear

While it can become expensive to constantly purchase new shoes with every sport, it is also a preventative measure to ensure your child’s foot and ankles are well taken care of. Often, a sport can cause an increase in deterioration with shoe soles. New shoes often mean fewer trips to the local pediatric podiatry clinic.

Open Communication

Speaking with your children daily ensures you are practicing effective communication within your household. But, do you often ask how their feet are doing after sports practice? Children’s foot doctors recommend adding this to household conversations.

Rest – Ice – Compression – Elevation

If you have a child who is complaining about a foot or ankle pain, having them sit out a practice will allow them to recover adequately before possible injuries occur. If the pain persists, contact a foot and ankle specialist for a complete checkup.

Injuries in children are no joking matter. Adding as many preventative tips into daily routines is imperative to ensuring your child is always healthy.
