TREATING BIG TOE ARTHRITIS

Do you have big toe arthritis (hallux rigidus)? This type of arthritis affects the joint at the base of the big toe. This joint is prone to developing arthritis. If you are experiencing pain around the base of the big toe, then you should seek medical attention.  Some common signs are pain at the base of the big toe, swelling of the toe and having difficulty with running and walking up hills. When your big toe has to bend upwards, the bone spurs pinch together to cause pain and inflammation.

Your podiatrist can test the mobility of your big toe joint and take an x-ray to determine how much of your joint cartilage has been worn away. This will help to determine the extent of arthritis.

Once you determine you have big toe arthritis, get the proper footwear to reduce inflammation. Proper footwear includes stiff-soled shoes (limits your big toe motion) and adding a rocker bottom (curved sole) to your shoes, which helps the foot transition from the heel to the toe while walking.  Another remedy is anti-inflammatory medications because they will help to decrease pain and swelling. Your doctor may inject cortisone into your big toe, which may be painful but gives rapid relief and lasts a long time.

Speak to your podiatrist about surgery and if it is right for you.  People should try simple steps before getting an invasive treatment. The two common surgical procedures are cheilectomy (removes the bone spurs) and arthrodesis (fusion). A major concern with cheilectomy is that it removes bone spurs but the joint is still arthritic. You could get a fusion, which eliminates the pain while leaving the toe permanently stiff.
