Patient Case Study: How River Podiatry helped our patient restore his foot health

At River Podiatry, we help patients address their foot issues in order to restore their foot health. Today, we take a look at how we have helped Mickey address his ankle issues to help him get back to his normal life.

Here is a timeline of how we helped Mickey...

On February 2, 2019, we began the process of helping Mickey stabilize his right ankle through Syndesmosis Repair (Photo Below).

The syndesmosis is the name of the ligament that connects two bones of the leg. These bones, the tibia, and fibula are between the knee and ankle joints. The tibia is the larger shin bone that supports most of the weight of the body, and the fibula is the smaller bone on the outside of the leg. Connecting these bones is a ligament called the syndesmosis, also called the syndesmotic ligament.

Syndesmosis ligament injuries often occur in conjunction with other ankle injuries, including sprains and fractures. If a damaged syndesmosis is left untreated, poor results often occur. The ankle joint is held in proper alignment by the ends of the tibia and fibula, which wraps around the inner and outer side of the ankle. If the syndesmosis is damaged, the ankle joint may become unstable.

A syndesmosis injury occurs when the foot twists outwards relative to the leg, a so-called external rotation injury. This type of injury can occur when the ankle is forcefully twisted outwards, or when the foot is planted, and the leg twists inwards.

Once River Podiatry helped Mickey address his ankle issues, he was able to focus on returning to his extreme activity.

Seven months after surgery, Mickey was able to fully return to his normal activity. Prior to surgery, he had a target return date for the summer of 2019. On August 24, 2019, Mickey completed the first leg of the Spartan Trifecta, The Sprint (pictured below). The Spartan Trifecta is a series of three events that includes the following:

  1. Spartan Sprint: 5k with 20 obstacles

  2. Spartan Super: 10K with 25 Obstacles

  3. Spartan Beast: Half Marathon (21k) with 30 obstacles

The terrain was rocky, uneven, and challenging, “My repaired ankle performed perfectly over the 3.5 mile course with obstacles.” mentioned Mickey. This race would set up Mickey for success for the rest of 2019.

On November 2, 2019, Mickey completed the second leg of the Spartan Trifecta, (the Spartan Super). The 8 mile event was in Vernon, New Jersey and extremely mountainous, “I actually twisted my ankle twice but it responded wonderfully.” said Mickey.

With the year coming to an end, Mickey was able to complete the third and final event of the Spartan Trifecta (The Spartan Beast) on December 7th, 2019. The race was extremely demanding and designed to physically and mentally challenge Spartan racers. Although Mickey was ultimately pushed to his limits, he was able to complete the third and final race before the end of the year, “Because of Dr. Han's work, I am a member of the Spartan Trifecta Tribe for life.”

We take great pleasure and responsibility in helping patients like Mickey address their foot health issues to change their lives for the better.

Dr. Han is a caring physician who truly places value on a patient and all that he or she has to offer. I’ve attached a few photos of me jumping over fire in the first two races on my expertly repaired ankle and a photo from the third race.

It is with profound admiration and gratefulness that I recommend Dr. Han for any issues requiring even the mention of a podiatrist. He will have you back to your normal life, or in my case seeking new adventures, quicker than you can wiggle your toes.

Dr. Han restored my ankle and with it my confidence to run. Schedule a consultation to find how he can assist in upgrading YOUR life...
