Thick toenails are toenails that have grown thicker over time and when left untreated, can become quite painful. Your toenails can thicken due to a number of reason that include:

  • injury

  • tight-fitting shoes

  • fungal infection, such as onychomycosis

  • psoriasis, a skin condition that causes rapid cell build up on the skin’s surface

In order to properly cut your thick toenails, we recommend the following steps:

  1. soak your feet in warm water for at 10 minutes or more to soften your toenails

  2. use a towel to thoroughly dry your feet and toenails

  3. use a nail clipper to make small cuts to avoid splintering the nail and cut straight across

  4. avoid rounding out off the corners to reduce prevent the nail from becoming ingrown

  5. use an emery board or nail filer to smoother edges

If your thick toenails are too painful and you do not feel comfortable cutting them without help, we recommend speaking with a podiatrist. Should you have any questions, please contact our team here to set up an appointment online, by email at info@riverpodiatry.com or by phone at (845) 735-8440.
