COMMON TYPES OF FOOT SURGERY
There are several foot conditions that can result in general foot and ankle discomfort. It is also not unusual for any pain or discomfort to be consistent and unrelenting. Of course, on-surgical interventions should be considered, and used, before you opt into surgery. You should always speak in depth with your podiatrist so that you can agree on the best treatment options for you.
In instances where surgery is the only option, you’re able to alleviate the discomfort faster. Let’s discuss a few of the most common foot surgeries podiatry clinics see.
BUNION SURGERY
Bunions are noticeable to the eye when the toe joint becomes inflamed and disjointed. There are many different types of bunion surgeries to choose from and your foot doctor will help you go over all your options and make the best decision for your situation. If you choose surgery, surgery is used to straighten out the joint.
HAMMERTOE SURGERY
Hammertoes are seen when the toe becomes permanently bent. Again, depending on how severe the hammertoe is will depend on what type of surgery may be needed. Surgery could include removing a portion of the toe bone to realign the toe. Surgery could also involve fusing the toe joint so that it doesn’t happen again. Ask your podiatrist for their professional recommendations on what you should do.
NEUROMA SURGERY
Normally the cause of neuromas is trauma or injury. This trauma could be as simple as a twisting of the foot, stepping on something, or it might be the chronic kind due to repeated micro-trauma from an excessively flat foot. This surgery involves making an incision on the top of the foot so the nerve can carefully be removed. The nerve will be removed far enough back so it doesn’t continue to cause pain or discomfort.
TENDON SURGERY
Tendon surgery is used to lengthen or shorten a tendon. Tendon surgery may be useful for patients who have tendon injuries, such as Achilles Tendonitis, which can make walking painful and difficult to move.
Be sure to contact your podiatrist for a consultation and full examination before considering surgery. Surgery should only be used when non-surgical interventions are no longer working for you.
