EVERYTHING AGES, EVEN FEET

There’s a common trait that happens as we age regardless if we are women or men – aging.  It’s an unfortunate occurrence and something we might someday thank gravity for. Before it gets to that point, let’s discuss a couple of common traits that happen as we age and our feet age.

Dry Heels –

A local podiatrist in Rockland County NY recently reported that 71% of women have cracked heels. This happens because as women age, collagen becomes less apparent. Collagen affects various parts of a female’s body and while most women focus on getting collagen fillers in their face and neck, their feet should not be forgotten. We are not recommending any fillers in your feet, of course, simply stating remember your feet age just like the rest of your body.

HOW TO PREVENT DRY FEET AND HEELS

A great idea is to purchase a heel balm. A heel balm is like lotion but specific for feet. Add heel balm and cover your feet with comfy socks while doing your night-time routine. It’s best to do this every night before bed so you can moisturize your feet and sleep with the balm on for extended foot hydration.

Soft/Breaking Nails –

When we age, we lose water content in our nails. A loss in water causes the nail bed to become brittle and soft. Brittle and soft nails peel, split and crack. This can be troubling because if we are not paying close attention, our nails could grow into the skin around our toes which would result in an infection, ingrown toenails. Ingrown toenails are removed when a foot specialist removes the infection and part of your toenail via minor surgery.

HOW TO PREVENT NAILS FROM BREAKING

When visiting your local supermarket or pharmacy, look for a nail strengthening product. It will look like a nail polish bottle but clear and should reference nail strengthening on the bottle. Another way to prevent nails from breaking is to make sure you're eating and drinking a well-balanced diet. Ensuring your body is receiving the recommended 64 ounces of water per day, will help your nails stay strong and your skin hydrated.
