As humans, we rely on our feet to get us from point A to point B on a regular basis. We often overlook how privileged we are to have feet that are strong enough to withstand so much weight and pressure daily. But we shouldn’t.

Our feet are miraculous parts of our bodies and they should be treated as such. So how do you keep your feet healthy so they last year after year and day after day without health issues? Let’s discuss.

Wearing Shoes That Fit – This is one tip that seems so obvious but is one of the most common issues overlooked. It can be hard to give up that expensive pair of shoes that are a half size too small but look so good. However, if your feet are constantly hurting, it’s time to schedule an appointment to see a foot doctor and purchase a new pair of shoes that fit!

Clean and Dry Feet Daily – Our feet constantly sweat. In fact, we sweat more than half a pint a day. You may be wondering, well if I sweat so much how do I keep my feet dry and clean? One way – try to change your socks throughout the day by having an extra pair in your car, desk or purse. This not only keeps your feet dry but will allow also get rid of bacteria that were released from your feet sweat glands earlier in the day.

Cutting Toenails Properly – Ingrown toenails are a common issue among many men, women, and children. The proper way to cut your toenails is to cut them straight across without a curve on the edges. If you believe you may have an ingrown toenail, call the nearest foot doctor and schedule a consultation.

Pedicures – Pedicures allow you to remove any excess dead skin from your feet. By soaking your feet and removing excess skin, you are allowing your feet to breathe better and have better circulation. Of course be sure to get pedicures from a reputable, clean, and reliable professional.

Examine Feet and Lotion Daily – Having dry or flakey skin can cause open wounds and infections on your feet. A fast way to eliminate this is by using a foot appropriate lotion daily.

Public Area Protection – Showering at the gym or school locker room is a great feature, but not so much for your feet. Most public areas are not cleaned after every use and going barefoot in them could open your feet up to catching serious infections. Instead, use a pair of flip flops or shower shoes every time you walk into a locker room or spa.

Don’t Share Shoes – Similar to public area protection, it is important you don’t share shoes. Most people may not realize how much sweat is in shoes and sweat is full of bacteria - bacteria you don't want to be exposed to!
