ONE THING A DIABETIC SHOULD NEVER IGNORE

When it comes to being diabetic, every safety precaution must be taken, even something considered small,  such as a little cut or sore, because they can turn into a serious health hazard. In this blog post, we've outlined the one thing you should never ignore as a diabetic, which is diabetic foot ulcers.

Although foot ulcers can begin by having a long walk where circulation is cut off, or by wearing a new pair of shoes that give you a blister, diabetic foot ulcers are nothing to mess around with. In fact, the ulcer can cause your foot to stop getting oxygen and have excess blood clots. Excess blood clots can become so bad, that the only option forward is amputation.

While there’s nothing you should ignore when it comes to your body, some diabetic foot doctors recommend paying extra close attention to any sores you may get.

Ulcers cause damage to nerves and they can cause your skin to wear away. If you notice a small area of blood or a sore forming, the key is to get care as soon as you notice the issue. That means picking up the phone and scheduling a visit with Dr. Han of River Podiatry, who is an expert in treating diabetic wounds.

Prevention is also key. Now, we aren’t recommending you forgo your favorite activities because you're worried you might get a sore, instead, we have two great tips on how you can help prevent foot ulcers.

  1. Limiting your blood sugar levels. Uncontrolled glucose can cause a loss of feeling in your feet. When this happens, you may not notice pain from a sore that has formed. Limiting and watching your blood sugar levels will also help the healing process if you do notice a sore.

  2. Monitoring your feet. This one might sound a bit strange but in fact, Han of River Podiatry, recommends looking your feet over every morning and night. This lets you catch any sores immediately, so you can prevent further issues. If you’re not able to see the bottoms of your feet, use a handheld mirror on the floor and move your foot over the mirror so you can see the bottoms. You can also ask a family member for their help if you have someone who lives with you.

The key here is to pay attention to the small stuff. It might seem odd to focus so much attention on a small cut, but as a diabetic, it could save you from excess issues in the future - such as amputation.
