If you are over the age of 40, arthritis is one of the most common risk factors. Here are the 5 types of arthritis as well as their symptoms to look out for:
1. Gout
Gout it caused by excessive uric acid production that triggers an autoimmune response resulting in a gout attack. Gout flare-ups can come suddenly and is so painful that even a blanket touching your foot can be painful. It typically is focused on the big toe, but if ignored an affect other parts of the foot. Symptoms include swelling and redness.
2. Osteoarthritis
This one is the most common of the five. It’s also known as “wear-and-tear” arthritis because of the gradual destruction of the cartilage of your bones, particularly the cartilage that cushions your joints. So when it gets damaged, bones will rub against each other and cause foot pain.
3. Psoriatic arthritis
This type of arthritis is specific to people who have psoriasis. If you have this, you’ll notice patches of redness and bumps on your skin that are painful and covered by white, scaly skin. However, not every person with psoriasis will have psoriatic arthritis. But if you do have it, look out for your feet being swollen and stiffening of joints.
4. Post-traumatic arthritis
If you’ve sustained an injury in your foot, it can weaken your joints and put them at risk of developing osteoarthritis. Especially if it’s a foot or ankle injury doesn’t heal properly. The joint weakness can put extra strain on your feet and speed up the wear-and-tear process. Symptoms include welling, accumulation of fluid in the affect joint, and difficulty walking.
5. Rheumatoid arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis can actually affect people who are younger because it is an autoimmune condition that causes excessive inflammation build-up on your joints. This type of arthritis can lead to curled toes and bunions. Other symptoms are: enlarged joints, swelling, flare-ups, and difficulties walking and standing.
