A bunion is a bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of your big toe. It occurs when some of the bones in the front part of your foot move out of place. This causes the tip of your big toe to get pulled toward the smaller toes and forces the joint at the base of your big toe to stick out. Bunions are known to be very painful and wearing shoes that are too small or too narrow in the toe area is the most common cause of bunions.

In some cases, bunion correction is necessary if nonsurgical treatment methods are unable to provide pain relief. Removing a bunion is a surgical process that corrects a deformed area of the foot near the big toe.

Here are the typical scenarios you may make you an ideal candidate for bunion surgery:

  • you are unable to bend or straighten your big toe

  • your big toe remains swollen and painful after resting your foot and/or using medication

  • you are unable to walk more than a few blocks without experiencing severe pain

  • your pain restricts and/or prohibits you from completing everyday routines or activities

Although there are various types of bunion correction procedures available, the type of surgery you will need depends on the severity of your bunion and its current size.
