Do You Have Achilles Tendinitis?

Does your Achilles tendon feel like it’s aching, sore, stiff, or throbbing? If yes, you could be suffering from tendinitis. If you ignore the pain early on, this may lead to chronic pain or even a rupture in the tendon. But if it is treated in its early stages, it rarely requires surgery.

Keep in mind that each situation is unique and is associated with various risk factors, so seek professional help to best treatment plan.

What to do in its early stages:

Once you notice pain or discomfort use RICE Therapy, which stands for:

Rest: Stop doing activities that may be causing the pain.

Ice: Put an ice pack on the spot for 15 minutes after exercising.

Compression: Use a compression wrap around your foot and ankle.

Elevation: Use a couple pillows to prop your feet up when you rest or sleep.

Use this therapy for a few days to see if the pain and discomfort goes away. If it doesn’t, you likely have a deeper issue that is triggering the pain and should seek professional help.

Tips to prevent Achilles Tendinitis:

  • Always wear shoes that fit your feet and give you the support that you need

  • Make sure you’re wearing the correct shoes that correspond with the activity you’re doing (Example: Running shoes for running)

  • Look into orthotic inserts if needed
