What Are Bunions?

A bunion is a bony hump that forms beside the big toe. They arise when the big toe begins to angle inwards towards the second toe. If the big toe continues to stay in this position, the joint becomes swollen and inflamed causing a bunion to form.

What Are The Causes of Bunions?

The majority of bunions occur because of shoes that don’t fit properly. Shoes that are narrow in the toes often cause bunions if worn for long periods of time. Typically high heel shoes pose a risk to the health of toe joints because they tend to taper towards to the front. This forces your weight downward towards the toes, pushing the toes into a very confined space.

Prevention

Prevention is the best medicine when it comes to bunions in its early stages. Wearing shoes designed to prevent bunions is the best way to prevent bunions from forming. However, if a bunion has started forming, we recommend setting up an appointment to speak with our team of trusted foot health professionals.
