How to Fight Foot Cramps

Cramps happen when muscles function improperly. Most muscles work in teams of two: one muscle contracts while the other is relaxed. A muscle cramp occurs when one of the muscles momentarily loses the ability to relax.

The Cause of Cramps

There are two main reasons for cramping: poor nutrition and fatigue. If your muscles aren’t being constantly fed the right chemicals they need to function, then over time they will be more prone to brief breakdowns. The same thing can happen if they are abused or overworked.

What can help with poor nutrition is increasing your intake of Vitamin B6, D, E, potassium, calcium, and magnesium; as well as drinking more water.

Fatigue is typically caused by overuse and stress on your feet.  Many athletes, runners, and dancers experience cramps, while on the other spectrum, people who are older and less in shape with weakened muscles are prone to suffer from cramps as well.

What Should You Do If You Have A Cramp

If you have a cramp, heat and massage the muscles to relax them and increase blood flow. You can also gently stretch your feet and calves.
