My Ankle “GIVES AWAY.”
If you have played sports at a higher level at one point in your life or had repeated ankle sprain, however minor each injury might be, it is a very common occurrence to notice that your ankle “gives away.”
Once the ligaments around your ankle are damaged and unable to heal properly creating an unstable environment around the ankle leading to a perpetual cycle of recurring injuries and ankle pain.
Without addressing the issue of ankle instability, repeated injury to the ankle ligaments can lead to degenerative changes and possibly osteoarthritis over time.
What are my treatment options?
Dr. Han will ask questions to determine whether you have the common signs and symptoms of chronic ankle instability, including repeated ankle sprains, pain, and fear of your ankle “giving way.”
A detailed physical exam and series of tests will be performed to examine “overstretching” of your ankle ligaments, as well as muscle strength and ankle motion.
Finally, imaging studies like x-rays and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) will be conducted to confirm the diagnosis.
If ligament damage is confirmed with imaging studies, Dr. Han will discuss the treatment options that will suit your needs.
