WHAT THAT PAIN ON THE SIDE OF YOUR FOOT COULD BE

A pain on the outside (lateral) of your foot can be a result of many things, but it’s not something you should self-diagnose. Instead, see a podiatrist so that you get a proper diagnosis as well as an appropriate treatment strategy.

One of the most common causes of lateral foot pain is a stress fracture. This is a small crack on the external surface of a bone. It’s referred to as a “stress fracture” because it’s caused by the bone being repeatedly put under some sort of stress. Stress fractures are considered overuse injuries: it’s not one event that causes this, but rather repetitive events. A stress fracture often occurs in the lower extremities, especially the lower leg, or the foot among people who engage in weight-bearing exercise, such as running, ballet dancing, or basketball

Often, when someone has a stress fracture, the first symptom is tenderness right over a specific area. There may also be swelling. Usually the pain comes on slowly over a few days or weeks and the pain is in the same spot that worsens as you continue with your activity.

A stress fracture can be diagnosed with an MRI, which your physician can request. If you have a stress fracture, you may need to modify your activities so that you can work out without pain. Often, that means curtailing high-impact workouts so the bone can heal. Ice should be applied to the affected area. To reduce the pain and swelling, usually, it’s recommended you take acetaminophen, as well as apply ice several times a day for two to three days or longer, to reduce swelling and tenderness.
