As COVID-19 has forced our community to proactively practice social distancing, there has been a noticeable increase in individual cardiovascular activities such as running and jogging.

As these activities continue to increase, it is important to choose the right running shoes. Whether you are running for fun or training for a marathon, the right running shoes will be able to provide the proper foundation for your entire body, can prevent injuries and make it far more enjoyable to log those miles.

Here are a few things to consider to help you find the best shoe that fits your activity:

  1. Consider the terrain: Whether you choose to run on the road, trails or on gravel paths, each terrain will feel different on your feet. To help each the tension on your feet, it is important to buy the best running shoes for each type of terrain that you will run on. When it comes to running shoes, we recommend grouping your choices under three options:

    1. road-running shoe

    2. trail-running shoes

    3. cross-training shoes

  2. Decide on cushion: A running shoe’s comfortability will depend on the type of cushion level you prefer while participating in cardiovascular activity. Cushioning takes into consideration two factors: (1) the thickness of material under the midsole and firmness of the foam and (2) the heel drop are two factors to consider when choosing your running shoe.

  3. Fit from the start: Your running shoe should properly fit from the moment you put them on and lace them up. Your feet should never feel uncomfortable or pressured in any way, shape or form and there should never be a “breaking-in period”.

In general, running shoes typically last 400-500 miles of running, which works out to 3-4 months of running for the average runner. Whether you are considering running for the first time or increasing your existing running activity, it is always important to speak with a foot doctor to ensure you are doing what is necessary to help prevent injuries.
